Common Tire Problems

Tires normally wear out over time. The rubber also disintegrates over time. Even if the tread looks great, the rubber may not be so great. Professionals recommend replacing tires at least every six years, even if the tread is good, or you may have unexpected blowouts or flat tires.

Common tire issues include:

Tire Wear: Uneven tire wear is caused by misalignment and incorrect tire pressure. If the tires wear only in the center of the tread, the tire has too much pressure. If they wear evenly on the outside edges of the tread, the tire doesn’t have enough pressure. If the tire tread scallops or wears only on one side, the problem is with the alignment and / or suspension.
Bald Tires: When the tread wears down to less than 2/32 inch, the tires are considered bald. They won’t have any traction, which could cause an accident, even on dry roads. We recommend new tires when the tires reach 4/32 inch, especially during the winter.
Punctures and Damage: Nails, potholes, curbs, and debris in the road can cause punctures and damage. Any of these could cause a blowout. Rubbing a curb hard enough or too many times could also cause a separated tire.
Sidewall Damage: When checking the tire tread, always pay attention to the sidewalls, too. A separated tire shows up as a bubble on the sidewall. Cracks and other damage can also cause blowouts.

You should have the alignment checked at least once every year – and if you drive on rough roads or hit potholes, you should have it checked more often. If the wheels are not aligned, the tires will wear out much faster.

Yocum Automotive can do three types of alignments. The type depends on your vehicle. Afront-end alignment only aligns the front wheels. Front-end alignments are common on vehicles that don’t have adjustable rear suspensions.

Four-wheel alignments or thrust angle alignments make sure all four wheels are aligned. Most modern vehicles require four-wheel alignments.
